PHL – a good place to connect

It’s rare that I fly through Philly, but I was recently pleasantly surprised by the PHL Airport.  Let me count the reasons:

1. Shopping! It’s not limited to Brookstone or the men’s travel staples of PGA Tour Shop and Johnston & Murphy. For the casual chick (or dude, I suppose), there’s a Gap. I was able to pick up an extra pair of jeans to make up for drunk packing the night before. For that reason alone, it was near and dear to my heart.

2. Beauty/Relaxation. Every airport should offer a quick mani/pedi/massage spot. If you have an hour or more to kill before flights, you might as well put it to good use doing something other than work. You work too much anyway. I was unable to partake on this trip (see drunk packing fix shopping above), but it’s a good option to have for all of those times you can’t squeeze it in before a trip.

3. Food. I’m a junk-food junkie as much as anyone, but one of the things I’m trying to do is find healthier airport options. This over 30 body just isn’t what it used to be. I opted for Burrito Elito. Not only is it fun to say, it offers freshly squeezed juice,  the salsa was made with real vegetables, and the chicken salad was much better than typical airport fare. Apparently, they are a subsidiary of California Tortilla.

If Mexican isn’t your thing, Terminal C also offers Sky Asian Bistro for sushi lovers. And there’s the more typical airport food court in the walkway between terminals with a Chick Fil-A.

4. Taking a page from CLT, PHL also offers rocking chairs throughout the terminal. It’s not my thing, but judging from the crowd, people dig a good rock between flights.

The Morning After Airport

Baton Rouge Metro Airport is not much to look at and after a New Orleans wedding, it seems as the airport feels just as bad as you do.

It’s got a damp smell to it and very little to offer in the way of amenities. Even the staff seem like they don’t want to be here. But for $300 less than a flight to NOLA, I can’t really complain.

Four Cities for the Price of One

Not that many of you will travel through the Quad Cities Airport but if you find yourself there and happen to be traveling with a child, this is a great distraction for the flight.

Early Spring Snow

This winter, I traveled to Roatan, part of the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras. In the spirit of Warner weather, I give you a photo from the place where I had one of the best meals of 2012, La Sierna.

The restaurant may not be much to look at, but you can beat the location on the East End of Roatan. And then there’s the food: the fish was the catch of the day, as in literally caught that day. Fresh salsa was a medley of fresh veggies served with homemade tortilla chips. A simple, healthy delicious meal served with the waves lapping below.

And if you time your trip right, you may even get to see the turtles, as the water around La Sierna serves as a turtle rescue sanctuary.

Take a break from the snow and think beach for a bit this afternoon.

Jupiter Hotel, Portland

The Jupiter is so Portland. From the hipster bands playing in the adjacent bar, to the chalkboard doors, the Jupiter is funky and fun.

And your room comes equipped with everything you may need beyond the minibar. A condom, ear plugs (you’ll definitely need these- the fun comes at a price), and a Breathe Right strip are all gratis.

It’s minimalist in design but since you’ll be up all night enjoying the microbrews and the band, you won’t even notice.

First things first

It’s customary to do an introductory post, but this has been such a long time coming there’s no good place to start. I’ll just say, I travel A LOT so here’s my attempt to share tips from the road. It’ll be a hodge-podge of airports, hotels, restaurants, shopping, music and other miscellany. Enjoy!
