PDX favorites

As far as business trip destinations go, you can do a lot worse than Portland. This time it included visits to some old favorites and new to me gems.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of the burger from Clyde Common but holy crap, it was amazing. It’s one of those burgers that’s big enough you wonder how you’re going to get it in your mouth. Add-ons of a fried egg, bacon and blue cheese didn’t make it any easier but it was worth every bite.

For drinks, we stopped by the Multnomah Whiskey Library. They keep the crowd small so everyone has a seat and the whiskey can be savored. This place is as beautiful as the whiskey is plentiful and it’s topped off with impeccable service.

Kask was a new one for me, but the mixologists know what they’re doing. From the fun flaming drink to a punch made with creme de violette, we could not have been happier. And sitting at the bar, we witnessed firsthand all the goodness. It’s a cocktail lover’s dream.

Not Van Halen’s Panama

Flying Pirates advertised this as ruins but even if it’s not as old, an old hideout for Manuel Noriega in the middle of the jungle is still pretty cool.

Give us this day…

I’m no priest but it seems like this place was made for communion:

You Don’t Win Friends With Salad

Like the great Homer Simpson says, “You don’t win friends with salad.”

Thanks, McCoy’s!

Sometimes, I get to do really cool things

I’m told it was boring on tv, but I’m now a believer in the 12th Man because this Bears fan and lover of defense would have only had more fun if my Chicago team had played. Luckily, Peanut Tillman got Man of the Year so my Bears were well represented.

Udderly Delicious

The quick and dirty on B. Too, one of the new hot spots on DC’s 14th Street Strip:

•It nails the Belgium farm scene, complete with cow illustrations in the bathroom

•The food is delicious. From the steak tartare to the Pumpkin Cappuccino (soup, not coffee) to the Belgian Mac n Cheese, it was perfectly prepared.

•You had me at waffle. Sweet or savory, they’ve got what you need even if you didn’t know it.

•A beer list for the snobbiest of beer snobs.

What more do you need?

Now that’s message discipline: a bike rack fit for the beer emporium Flying Saucer in downtown Raleigh.

A Minneapolis Original

While the origin of the Jucy Lucy is a long standing debate in the Twin Cities, you can find this cheese-filled burger at bars across the area. For my taste test, I ventured to a newer version at Groveland Tap.

On first bite, the cheese is bubbling hot, so the JL is usually severed with a warning to let it cool while you enjoy the fries. Believe me, it’s worth the wait.

While the Groveland Lucy was good, I’m still a fan of Matt’s. next time, proximity may not win out.

Speaking of Chicago…

Here’s a nice shot from the Wendella Architecture Boat Tour:

Now, that is a beautiful city. And if you haven’t taken the tour, you should. There’s a bar on board, you’re on a boat checking out the skyline and you can even learn a little in the process. What’s not to love?
